Biography

Eddie Kennedy was born in North Tipperary, Ireland, in 1960 and graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design with a Distinction in Painting in 1983. He was awarded a full scholarship by the University of Cincinnati, where he received a Masters in Fine Art Painting, in 1989. Subsequently, after spending some years painting in New York he returned home to Ireland. He has maintained a significant relationship with the United States where he has exhibited with, among others, the John Cacciola Gallery in Chelsea and at art fairs in Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago. In Ireland, he is represented by Hillsboro Fine Art in Dublin and has also had a number of highly successful exhibitions in Cork, Belfast and London.

His painting has been the subject of many accolades. He is seen as an innovative explorer in the world of landscape. However, for Kennedy, the landscape is “a hanger for the paint - a point of departure, a sounding board for finding the voice within”. Fellow Irish painter Donald Teskey finds Kennedy’s paintings “portraits of light and space ... optimistic, full of light, inviting and also daring”. Irish Times art critic, Aidan Dunne, too applauds Kennedy’s unique exploration of surface, texture, space and light, commenting “these are paintings made for us to inhabit”. Thread – his last showing of new paintings at Hillsboro Fine Art in November, 2012, was very well received. A hardback publication with essays by Theo Dorgan, Randall Exon and Barbara Rae was produced to accompany this exhibition.

His work continues to garner praise, reviewing his most recent showing Just a Shade, at the Triskel Christchurch in Cork City in November 2014, in The Sunday Times, Cristín Leach Hughes sees the paintings as “striking”... concluding “The whole exhibition is a passionate love song to the coast, by one of our most exciting painters of the meeting between land, sea and sky.”

2015 sees Kennedy included in The Art of a Nation at the Mall Galleries in London. This will be the first major exhibition in London for nearly twenty-five years to celebrate the story of Irish art from 1900 to the present day, presented in collaboration with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Crawford Art Gallery.
