La rinitis del embarazo afecta a una de cada cinco gestantes y consiste en una permanente congestión nasal y estornudos constantes. Te contamos cómo tratar esta condición durante la gestación.

Ustedes saben que me gusta hablar desde la experiencia, y durante mi embarazo yo sufrí un cuadro de rinitis. Además de la constante congestión nasal y picazón, padecí un cuadro de asma. Tranquilas, no fue nada grave gracias al oportuno diagnóstico médico.

Según estudios médicos, una de cada cinco embarazadas -tengan o no antecedentes de padecer alergias respiratorias- desarrolla rinitis durante el embarazo. Esta condición es variable en su intensidad, siendo recomendable consultar directamente con tu ginecólogo si tienes dificultades para respirar o tos excesiva. El principal riesgo de este tipo de cuadros es que la tos sea tan fuerte que provoque contracciones que podrían derivar en un parto prematuro, pero afortunadamente esto se controla con medicamentos.

Algunos antihistamínicos están autorizados para ser consumidos durante el embarazo, pero debes chequear con tu médico, pues no debes automedicarte durante la gestación. Los remedios más recomendados son la desloratadina y, en casos más complejos, inhaladores nasales o pulmonares con corticoides. No te preocupes si te recetan corticoestoroides, pues tras las 30 semanas de gestación los pulmones de tu hijo ya están desarrollados y el medicamento ayuda a la maduración de éstos. No consumas descongestionantes, ya que contienen pseudoefedrina, compuesto contraindicado en el embarazo, especialmente durante el primer trimestre porque traspasa la barrera placentaria y puede causar malformaciones en el feto.

Si prefieres manejar tu congestión sin medicamentos, puedes aprovechar los beneficios del vapor para despejar tus vías respiratorias. Llena un recipiente con agua recién hervida y posiciona tu cara sobre el recipiente, cubriendo tu cabeza con una toalla. Inhala profundamente el vapor, el cual dilatará tus fosas nasales y pulmones, permitiéndote respirar mejor (además dilatará tus poros, dejando tu piel limpia y suave).
